Giant Mail Day and a Big Retail Hit

 Yesterday was probably the biggest mail day I've had in my time in this hobby. Via some breaks on Fanatics Live as well as a couple direct purchases, I had no fewer than six autographs delivered to me. Starting with hits from breaks, I got the following two AC Milan legends. Andriy Shevchenko orange auto /25 as well as one of the greatest defenders of all time, Paolo Maldini black lazer blue auto /150. I took AC Milan in quite a few breaks because they have such a big legends checklist. 


Another hit from a break was this awesome gold /50 dual autograph of Newcastle legends Alan Shearer (the all time Premier League goalscorer) and Les Ferdinand. It's a really beautiful card in person as well.
Finally, the last hit from a break in this post was from a Juventus spot I purchased, in which I hit David Trezeguet numbered /199.
My two direct purchases were also huge autographs. The first is a Samuel Eto'o Panini Select green auto /5. 
The other was Barcelona and Spain legend Andres Iniesta on the tie dye numbered /25. All six of these autographs ended up in either my icons/legends case or my stars case. 

I also happened to find some retail during a Target run recently. Topps Chrome football has been near impossible to find anywhere on local shelves because the resell value is so high and the flippers are snatching them up. There has been a lot of hype about the stuff and I wanted to try my hand at least one box when I finally found one. Luckily, I was able to find a couple mega boxes. I ripped one and am giving the other to my brother-in-law. Well, I hit a pretty big autograph in the form of Lions all-pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown /499.

Los Angeles Dodgers @ Petco Park 4/10/13

I decided to head downtown to Petco Park for the first time this new season for my first foray into my hobby of collecting autographs in quite some time.  I skipped out on Opening Day due to the fact that all the hoopla associated with the opening of any new season.  I walked to my spot during the bottom of the ninth in what turned out to be a 4-3 Dodger win. I found out from one of the guys waiting (a nice fellow who was visiting from Florida) that the Dodgers were staying in the Omni Hotel, which is actually connected to Petco Park by a bridge that visiting players often use to circumvent the autograph hounds that wait below.  This was a little disheartening at first, until I also found out that most of the dodgers actually walked out at ground level the night before.  All in all there were only about ten or so "graphers" waiting, as opposed to the rumored forty the night before, so the potential for a good get was obviously there. Al Kaline-Through the Mail

As mentioned on a few of my previous threads, I have recently become interested in the idea of obtaining autographs through the mail.  There is a quite a bit of research involved in deciding which former athletes to send my items to, as I don't want to be spending money or using unsigned items on guys I have little to no chance of receiving anything from.  So far, this has paid off because up until this point I was 4/4 by sending things to Dirk Nowitzki, Ryne Sandberg, Wade Boggs, and Bobby Doerr.  You can read about all of those ventures and what I got signed by looking back on this blog.  Back on the 17th of January, I decided to mail an 8x10 photo to former Major Leaguer and Hall of Famer Al Kaline.  I chose a photo rather than my preferred choice of official baseball since I read on forums that Mr. Kaline won't sign baseballs through the mail.  As such, I found a photo I thought was cool, and sent it to the proper address using the correct channels....

Xabi Alonso and another Bowman Pull

 If you recall, I tried a Panini La Liga hobby box about a month ago and while my autos did not hit, the box overall still ended up making its value in back in other cards. I also managed to pull an auto from a retail blaster box but it ended up not being a big name. It got me thinking what some of the bigger throwback names on the autograph checklist might cost on eBay. That lead me to Xabi Alonso, who if you play EAFC, you will know is an icon in the game and what of the best midfielders globally during his era. To top it off, he played for the team I support, Liverpool as well as the biggest team in the world, Real Madrid. He also played internationally for Spain. The auto is one of the Blue Pulsar varieties that pop in person. I would have been happy to pull this from a blaster, but also happy that the card cost only a little more than what an unopened blaster would sell for.
