LA Clippers in Oceanside

 As you can probably tell by the name of this blog, I am located in Southern California. I live in Oceanside, to be precise. Last year, we opened a new arena locally which hosts some cool events that we would not otherwise have access to unless we travelled to San Diego (45 minutes) or Orange County (1 hour). My family and I became season ticket holders for the professional indoor soccer league team the San Diego Sockers. One of the perks was that we got a good discount for the LA Clippers game that the arena hosted last night, October 9th. The NBA's G League has a team that plays in the arena, the San Diego Clippers, and in conjunction with their parent team, a preseason game between the real Clippers and a Chinese team was hosted. I've only been to one NBA game and it was also a preseason game about ten years ago in San Diego. My son and I went to this game because we got tickets so cheap, and we brought some cards for my son to try and get signed. This blog's roots actually stem from me doing a lot of in person autograph chasing so, I'm excited to do a bit of a throwback for this post. 

The venue is small, which is conducive to getting autographs. The Clippers were warming up when we were allowed in. A lot of people were already lined up along the tunnel where the Clippers would walk in and out. Derrick Jones Jr signed for people for about ten minutes, but I didn't have anything for him. Ivan Zubac also signed for about ten minutes, but we didn't have any cards for him either. Finally, Cam Christie, a rookie last season, came out and did a TV interview before taking selfies with people and signing everything. My son brought a 2024 Mosaic cracked ice blue /125 rookie of Cam's and Cam was awesome enough to sign it for him.

It came out a little small because we didn't have the best pen/marker to get a glossy card signed with. My son is happy though, so that's all that really matters.

It was good to see a live NBA game so close to home, about five minutes away. It was cool that I saw at least three players signing autographs for big chunks of time. A fun little note as well, the Chinese team Guangzhou Loong Lions, had three former NBA players by my count. Victor Oladipo, Frank Kaminsky, and Justin Holiday.

 I've recently made a couple purchases from eBay of NFL Hall of Famers, including one my favorite players of all time, LaDainian Tomlinson. I went with the National Treasures on card auto for Tomlinson, and it's a good looking card numbered 14/49. This is the third Tomlinson item I have obtained, the first being a football he signed during his rookie year and the second being a jersey at a signing I attended 20 years ago. The other eBay item that recently was delivered was newly inducted former offensive lineman Joe Thomas of Cleveland Browns fame. As you can see, this card is numbered /50. Offensive lineman have almost no value to people that sell, so I was able to add this card in particular for real cheap. Any time I can get a cheap Hall of Famer, I'm in, especially an all time great player.

Los Angeles Dodgers @ Petco Park 4/10/13

I decided to head downtown to Petco Park for the first time this new season for my first foray into my hobby of collecting autographs in quite some time.  I skipped out on Opening Day due to the fact that all the hoopla associated with the opening of any new season.  I walked to my spot during the bottom of the ninth in what turned out to be a 4-3 Dodger win. I found out from one of the guys waiting (a nice fellow who was visiting from Florida) that the Dodgers were staying in the Omni Hotel, which is actually connected to Petco Park by a bridge that visiting players often use to circumvent the autograph hounds that wait below.  This was a little disheartening at first, until I also found out that most of the dodgers actually walked out at ground level the night before.  All in all there were only about ten or so "graphers" waiting, as opposed to the rumored forty the night before, so the potential for a good get was obviously there. Jackson Merrill public signing

 For the first time in a long time, I attended an in person signing. This one was held with Padres young star and last seasons rookie of the year runner up, Jackson Merrill. The signing was hosted at Honey Hole collectibles in Mission Valley, San Diego which is about 40 minutes south of me. The signing was to start at 6 and my brother in law showed up at about 4:45. The line to check in and get our tickets was already quite long. We ended up about halfway back in line, maybe a bit more, so we didn't actually get up to meet Jackson and get our cards signed until a bit after 8pm.   He was in a good mood, was talking to everyone, and taking a lot of photos so the line was moving pretty slow until a few of the Honey Hole employees came out and saw just how many people were still waiting.
